Excluding vagrants or accidental introductions, there are 18 species on the British and Irish list. Nine of these species are residents, while the other nine are summer migrants. Migration from southern Europe can start as early as February. Later in the year, multiple waves of migration take place across the south and east coasts during settled periods of fine weather.

Like all moths and butterflies, hawkmoths have a four-stage life cycle: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa and adult. Eggs are laid singly, concealed under leaves or on buds of the food plants. After hatching, the larva passes through five stages, becoming larger as it grows. A useful hawkmoth identification clue is the hooked tail horn of the larvae, present in almost all our species. When the larva is fully grown, it moves to the ground to pupate. Later, the emerging adult splits the hard pupal case and crawls away to finish developing its wings. Only some of our species feed as adults.

You can look for different species in the Hawkmoth's Guide during the day and around dusk. Flowers attractive to the two-day-flying bee hawkmoths and the hummingbird hawkmoth have nectar guides with strong ultraviolet patterns. Honeysuckle, which is very attractive to the two elephant hawkmoths and the striped hawkmoths, reflects a great deal of ultraviolet light. This is clearly visible to the moths at and just after dusk.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0996/4096/7550/files/GuidetotheHawkmothsoftheBritishIsles-FSCGuide.jpg?v=1776557521
concise-butterfly-and-moth-guide
Concise Butterfly and Moth Guide

This practical pocket field guide, published in association with the Wildlife Trusts, includes 150 butterfly and moth species from Britain and the near Continent.

Each species account contains accurate artworks that show details to help readers differentiate between male and female butterflies, moths and caterpillars of varying species. Moths evolved long before butterflies, and their importance cannot be overestimated. From the tiniest leaf miners to exotic hawk moths that are two hundred to three hundred times larger, these creatures are often crucial pollinators of flowers, including many that bloom at night or in twilight. The authors show that moths and their larvae are the main food source for thousands of animal species, and interact with other insect, plant, and vertebrate communities in ecosystems around the world, from tropical forests and alpine meadows to deserts and wetlands. The authors also explore such topics as evolution, life cycles, methods of communication, and links to humans.

A feast of remarkable facts and details, The Lives of Moths will appeal to insect lovers everywhere.

Andrei Sourakov is the collections coordinator for the McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity at the Florida Museum of Natural History.
